The Friends & Family Alpha (version 0.5.3, build 3368) is the earliest publicly available build of the WoW client to date.
The publication of this build included a debugging file, Wowae.pdb, which facilitated the reverse engineering of the client, giving rise to server emulators.
Though this version of the client is very different, the PDB file remains still an invaluable resource for those who wish to study WoW.
In addition to symbols, it includes information about every structure that was compiled into the client.
The Alpha Project
This client was revitalized with the creation of alpha-core, a 0.5.3 server emulator written in Python.
The Alpha Project also archives the history of WoW's development, compiling screenshots and videos from WoW alphas and betas.
